Wanna know what’s happened in the English Premier League (EPL) Opening Day? Don’t ya worry! W88indi got the results for you!
The most awaited 2020-2021 English Premier League (EPL) season kicked-off on September 12 as defending champions Liverpool FC battled Leeds United, who returned to the top flight after a 16-year absence.
The Premier League returnees made a sensational run throughout the match, fighting tooth and nail with the champions, but ultimately lost (4-3) to a penalty kick at the 88-minute mark.
Liverpool star Mohammed Salah led the team to victory as he scored the first hat-trick of the season, scoring two penalties (4’, 88’) and a strike from the penalty box.
An early header by Virgil van Dijk (20’) gave the Reds an early lead against Leeds. The three goals from Leeds came from Jack Harrison (12’), Patrick Bamford (30’), and Mateusz Klich (66’).
The opening day also saw the return of Fulham to the top flight after a year of relegation. Fulham won the playoff match against Brentford to secure the last spot for the 2020-2021 season.
However, Fulham cannot stop the relentless attacks by the gunners as they were handed a 3-0 defeat. Arsenal’s goals came from Alexandre Lacazette (8’), Gabriel (49’), and Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang (57’). Fulham is set to face Leeds United on September 19.
Top-flight returnees West Bromwich Albion was decimated by Leicester City in their opening day fixture. Leicester City scored three goals: a header from Timothy Castagne (56’), and two penalties from Jamie Vardy (74’, 84’). The 33-year-old Vardy, who won the league’s Golden Boot last year, again showed why the foxes are a force to be reckoned with.
West Brom goalkeeper Sam Johnstone played brilliant defense by denying several goals but his team failed miserably without a single goal scored. West Brom has a date with Arsenal on September 20.
All of the recently promoted teams suffered defeats in their opening day fixtures of the English Premier League. The season just started, but will the recently promoted teams survive in the Premier League or will they face relegation back to the Championship?
Gotta stay tune in this EPL season! Premier League matches resume on September 19, Saturday.
